The report celebrates a year of sustainable growth at the Center, highlighting the facility’s latest certifications and expanded sustainability and social responsibility programming.
PHILADELPHIA, PA – In commemoration of Earth Day, the Pennsylvania Convention Center released its “2024 Sustainability and Impact Report: On the Rise.” The report is a celebration of the Center’s significant sustainable growth over the past year and provides a summary of the facility’s environmental and social responsibility initiatives and accomplishments.
Some of the Center’s achievements in 2024 included earning the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) v4.1 Operations + Maintenance (O+M): Existing Buildings Silver certification, maintaining its Events Industry Council (EIC) Sustainable Event Standards gold certification and Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) STAR accreditation, and developing its internal sustainability and social responsibility initiatives to include educational programming and an expanded focus on community outreach.
“The Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility is unwavering, and the results of our 2024 Sustainability Report is a testament to this commitment,” said David A. Nasatir, Esq., Chair of the Board, Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority. “Our innovative approach to sustainability and social responsibility has led to the achievement of new industry certifications and recognitions, solidifying the Pennsylvania Convention Center’s position as a trusted venue partner for hosting sustainable events.”
During the year, the number of sustainable events hosted at the Center increased by 64%, a sign of the increasing importance of sustainability in the meetings and events industry and the confidence that meeting planners have in the Center’s ability to expertly host green events.
“We recognize that sustainability is a high priority for many of our customers and the Pennsylvania Convention Center has been successful in aligning our goals with our customers’ sustainability goals,” said John J. McNichol, President and CEO of the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority. “Our team always strives to be a reliable partner to our customers and an expert voice for sustainability and social responsibility, and we are very proud of the significant growth and impact we have achieved over the past year.”
In addition to the Center’s environmental sustainability initiatives, community outreach, through the ASM Global Acts program, continues to be a top priority for the facility. As highlighted in the report, in 2024, the Center formalized its event donation program and saw a 57% increase in participation by event customers, providing local organizations with much-needed items that remain at the end of an event. The Center also expanded its engagement initiatives through educational programming such as sustainability tours, school tours, and workshops and master classes, as well as enhanced volunteer opportunities for the facility’s staff.
Additionally, the report identifies the Center’s goals for the upcoming year, emphasizing its ongoing commitment to maintaining sustainability and social responsibility as a core part of its operations.
“ASM Global is committed to building strong, vibrant communities in the cities where we operate and we are grateful that the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority shares in this vision,” said Tony Hodgins, Regional General Manager, ASM Global. “Because of the Authority’s investments and support, our Pennsylvania Convention Center team has been able to expand our programs to ensure that our impact continues to be meaningful for the Greater Philadelphia community.
